What always gets me when watching them perform live is if you watch closely how Pete defers to roger Pete showing the respect of rogers interputaion 0f his songs.
God, I wasn't expecting the added verses at the end. It was a lovely rendition up to Pete singing, and then bang! Me in tears. Utterly beautiful. Glad John was there too.
Yes, exactly. This is the VERY best version of that song because of the 2 voices singing "à la tierce", and DALTREY's voice is outstanding particularly when in the high-pitched. This version is excellent, very enjoyable !
hard to hold a tear, if you imagine this song in a context of your own dysfunctional family........The Who will always be one of my favorite groups,.....hands down
John Entwistle Man that man turned the Bass from an instrument almost nobody in rock cared about in his time But then John came and turned the Bass from an instrument almost nobody cared about in rock to inspiring many people in rock to actually go and Play Bass and all that thanks to John Entwistle"s Spectacular Bass playing May God bless you John and I hope you have a great time in Bass Heaven or who knows maybe God decided to Reincarnate you as another Kick ass Bassist Guitarist whether even if your male again or who knows maybe even a female but anyway God bless Entwistle for what he did to The Bass and may his soul rest in piece in Bass Heaven.
The second half is just pure latter-day Townshend; an eloquent, reflective, and heartfelt commentary on his own song but from the perspective of the other end of a long and distinguished career. I do wish John had been able to chime in with his thoughts, especially since he didn't have much longer to live here, but he would probably have used the opportunity for a bit of his trademark morbid humor.
Roger’s voice sounds so good here. Unfortunately I’ve been on the receiving end of the band cancelling a couple times because his throat gave out. In Houston we were up front and he gave Pete a warning but the band just kept going and suddenly Roger just stepped back and walked off.
Beyond the simple positve votes for The Who, as someone who was 20 when they actually wrote this stuff, I have to remark on Roger's perfect, absolutely perfect, management of this song live. He does not stretch to notes he can no longer reach and he plays nicely, but not stupidly, to the audience. What a beautiful practitioner of his art. I look at Roger and think "wow, what a superb example of grace with the wisdon of age". Only Robert Plant can equal this level of eloquence. Hats off.
Its great to see the Ox with the band. If I had to list the three most memorable bass players I've seen live in concert I'd say..... (1) John Entwistle (2) Geddy Lee (3) Chris Squire
Ah, yes. The big three. Definitely very influential, and groundbreaking players who really pushed the role of electric bass into new dimensions. I think John Entwistle inspired Chris Squire who influenced Geddy Lee. Anyway, I concur with your list.
The Who are the best Live band of all time, Much better than all the other great rock bands like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, And the Stones, I love all of those bands but nobody can be a better live band Than The Who. Hairs stick up on the back of you're head when you watch the Who live.
it's like the man paints a masterpiece, & then 12 or 29 or 40 years later he decides to add a whole 'nother layer of paint and gesso & brushstrokes to the masterpiece. An old man, touching up his masterpiece. & it's ANOTHER FUCKING MASTERPIECE. Dang.
And a couple of really nice small interactions between Townsend and Daltrey...a nod, a smile, a look. They might annoy the crap out of each other but it sure looked like respect and affection to me.
I’ve watched this numerous times. And that exchange at the end were Pete looks to roger with obvious admiration gets me every time.. also love Pete’s added lyrics telling his story when he wrote the song awesome stuff
I was lucky to see The Who for the first time at the Lyceum when I was 14 or 15 , I’m 64 now and seen them umpteen times over the years and they are a class act, thank you Graham Johnson for introducing this band to me.
G-Dammit! The Irony and serendipity of having Zak Starkey as the best Who drummer since, (well ya know when... full Moon anyone). Is perfect and magical. Best Rock and Roll imho ever!
Many years ago when watching a concert by The Who on TV with friends, there was a young punk who loved Metalica ( nothing wrong with that ) who wouldn't stop ragging on about The Who, he simply kept on till we almost came to blows..( laughing ) The moral to this story : Metalica imploded and the kids remain. And they are Alright
Unbelievable how good they still sound after 40 + years after song first recorded. Unbelievable how well Roger can sing, and his range. Greaest group ever!
This song is 100 % Britpop. Such a beautiful song. I don't know how to explain what I want to say about it, but never mind… I'm French and I can tell, you British people, have the best rock bands on planet earth by far…
Roger's voice is stellar! I saw The Who and Golden Earring at Madison Square Garden during the Quadrophenia tour. This Albert Hall performance is super!
THE WHO --- simply the best live rock band ever !!!!! Then and now, and don't give me any crap about the stones, they haven't been able to really play for years and years.
An extended six minute version. Freaking awesome!!!! My favorite song from the early days. John “Theox”Entwhistle is still terribly missed. Sinc John died The Who have had as many bassists as Spinal Tap had drummers. Peter Dennis Blanford Townshend a man for all generations!!!!! At an age when most Rock nRoll stars are in a nursing home or in Forest Lawn Pete and Roger Daltrey are still out there performing incredibly fantastic.
Beautiful rendition of a classic song. Love Pete Townshends version at the climatic end! Zac Starkey does a great job on drums! So thrilled I found this live version today. Long Reign the WHO!
That's Ringo Jr. on the drums, everybody. He really kicks ass ! This is one of those beautiful songs they did back in '66. My favorite time for music .
Yeah, Daltrey was the best rock singer. But what's amazing to me is that if The Who had been a trio without Daltrey -- with Townshend and Entwistle on vocals -- they still would have been one of the greatest bands ever.
@@anthonygerace8926 This might just be a case of familiarity breeding contempt, but I really do prefer Pete and John on vocals. Pete's voice was able to be so delicate, yet still have attitude when it needed. John's voice was so versatile, both in range and dynamics. I personally love his versions of Twist and Shout.
i dont understand why people feel the need to compare bands to each other. the who and cream are both legendary!!! now stfu and enjoy the music. btw im amazed at how rogers voice managed to last for so many decades. he sounds great here
Whoa! -- 5:19 With what Daltrey's voice has been through over the decades he had NO business being able to sing that delicately and in that register. Nice how Townshend acknowledges it in the moment. It's so moving to hear this song and see these guys do it from the perspective of years. (Miss you Keith) Very touching. I love Pete almost as much as Eddie Vedder does. Maybe more.
That sounds right. The Beatles made it big commercially a couple of years before The Who did, so this might have been a successful attempt to get a Beatles-like sound. But Keith Moon (in the original recording) adds a whole other dimension, as he did for all of The Who songs until his death.
I saw them at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas in the 80's. Going in was truly scary, being pressed from all sides by people for the longest time, waiting to get in. The thing I thought was hilarious though was when we were in seats but the ground was standing room only, the emcee came up to the front microphone and screamed, "everybody move back, everybody move back!!!". Nobody moved. A few minutes another guy did the same thing. Nobody moved. The WHO come out, Roger holds the microphone and says, very sweetly, "would you mind shuffling back?" The whole floor of people move as one, backwards.
The Who were Punk Rock they had the attitude for their time they had that Rebellious streak with the attitude as well and they had the sound to match it on top of that.
